The Butterfly Effect of Spelled Oils

There are moments in our little corner of the magical world when one spark sets off an unexpected chain of events. Three days ago, that spark arrived in the form of a video, sharp tongued, certainty soaked and declaring that most creators if not all, were selling “fake oils,” and that anything beautiful, colorful, or adorned with intention could only ever be an illusion.

What was meant as a warning felt, instead, like a stone cast across a still pond.

Ripples formed. Voices rose. And Cauldrons bubbled.

Because while the message carried a hint of superiority, the reaction it summoned was something far more powerful. A collective uprising of support, validation, and unity. One harsh commentary became the catalyst for dozens , then hundreds , of witches, root workers, conjurers, and small business owners stepping into the light to uplift each other. A butterfly effect woven from community, not conflict.

And it left me thinking about the delicate balance we navigate in this craft. Yes, discernment matters. We should always know who we’re buying from, what their ethics look like, how they source, how they blend, how they honor the spirits and ingredients they claim to work with. Transparency is vital ! Especially when money, magic, and trust meet at a crossroads.

But somewhere between awareness and accusation, we must remember the humanity of our fellow practitioners. It is entirely possible to guide, educate, and caution without burning the very bridges that could lead someone toward real knowledge. Magic is powerful, but ego can scorch faster than fire.

When I first saw that video, I tried to understand both sides. The need to protect buyers. The desire to feel authoritative. The frustration that can brew behind the scenes when others grow, succeed, or create differently than you do. But as more videos poured out from the original poster , sharper, heavier, deeper cuts… something shifted in me.

The present energy shifted into sadness and dissapointment.

Sadness that someone would choose isolation over community. Sadness that a moment with the potential to educate became instead a monument to bitterness. What she didn’t realize is that her attempt to dim others made the rest of WitchTok shine even brighter. Creators shared their processes, their altars, their herbs, their oils, their spirits, their receipts and most importantly, their stories.

If there’s any lesson to pull from this week’s drama, it’s that the craft thrives when we uplift, not undermine. Every oil, every blend, every intention is a thread in a much larger weaving. And there is room for all, as our beloved Mermaid Stassi said in her video response to the moment.

In the end, perhaps the real magic wasn’t in the accusation, but in the reaction that followed. A reminder that community is stronger than cynicism. That beauty in a bottle doesn’t diminish its power. And that unity, when stirred, can transform even the harshest words into an unexpected blessing.

A butterfly flaps its wings.

A witch hits post.

And somewhere, an entire community remembers exactly who we are.
